3 Incredible Day Trips from Queenstown, New Zealand (that are totally worth the drive)

Queenstown, AKA New Zealand's Adventure Capital. This amazing alpine town is undoubtedly worth a visit. But what you might not know is that some of the most breathtaking places lie just beyond it. If you're looking to explore further afield without packing your bags, these three easy day trips from Queenstown will give you a taste of the South Island's natural beauty, charm, and hidden gems.

  1. Glenorchy

Distance from Queenstown: 46km (about 45 minutes by car)

Drive highlight: One of the most scenic roads in New Zealand

The drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy is a destination in itself. Hugging the edge of the dramatically beautiful Lake Wakatipu, you'll pass towering mountains, dramatic cliffs, and photogenic pull-offs around every bend. We found it worked best to take turns in who drove. That way, we both got a turn gazing at all of those incredible views.

Once you reach Glenorchy, a quiet (and tiny!) lakeside village, it feels like you've stepped directly into a postcard. The Glenorchy shed is one of New Zealand's most iconic landmarks, so to see if with your own eyes is a treat in itself.

What to do in Glenorchy:

  • Walk the Glenorchy Lagoon Boardwork: A gentle loop with epic views of the surrounding mountains and wetlands.
  • Visit the Glenorchy Red Shed: This one is impossible to miss! Make sure to take your signature Glenorchy photo here.
  • Go Horse Trekking or Jet Boating:
A photo in front of Glenorchy's red shed is - put simply - a right of passage.

2. Arrowtown

Distance from Queenstown: 21 km (about 20 minutes by car)

Drive highlight: A quick, easy trip through rolling hills and vineyard-dotted landscapes

Arrowtown is a charming, historic village that looks like it’s straight out of the 1800s. Once a gold rush town, it’s now full of character, great food, and boutique shopping. We definitely recommend visiting during Autumn - that way you'll get to experience the most incredible golden orange shades.

What to Do in Arrowtown:

• Wander the Historic Main Street: Cobbled footpaths, heritage buildings, artisan stores, and cafes.

• Visit the Chinese Settlement: A preserved part of history showing how Chinese gold miners lived in the 19th century.

• Grab a Pie from The Bakery or a Treat from Patagonia Chocolates.

• Cycle or Walk the Arrow River Trail: It’s an easygoing route with suspension bridges and river views.

Lake Hayes offers that spectacular classically New Zealand view of water and snow-peaked mountains

3. Lake Hayes

Distance from Queenstown: 15 km (about 15 minutes by car)

Drive highlight: A short and easy drive with mountain and lake views

Tucked between Queenstown and Arrowtown, Lake Hayes is one of the most peaceful and photogenic spots in the area. It’s ideal if you’re after a slow-paced, nature-filled outing close to town - you’re keen to do a relaxing nature walks

What to Do at Lake Hayes:
